Social Policy Unit (SPU) – a non-profit public institution founded by the Ministry of Social Security and Labour (MSSL) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Lithuania in 1996.
The mission of the SPU is - to promote principles of sustainable human development in social policy making by focusing attention of the society on an acute development problems and ways of their solution through strengthening national capacity in building inclusive knowledge society. For a decade SPU successfully implements national and international projects in the field of sustainable human development and social cohesion focused on: combating long-term unemployment, poverty, and homelessness; equal opportunities in the labour market, participatory community building for regeneration of deprived areas; gender mainstreaming, strengthening civil society (community building, social partnership), promoting life long learning.
Key SPU activities:
- Formulation and implementation of multidisciplinary social research projects;
- Social and sociological research;
- Methodological support to sociological research, project formulation and social policy making;
- Formulation and implementation of empowering continuous training programmes for adults;
- Guidance and counseling;
- Raising awareness of human development problems in a society;
- Preparation, issuing and dissemination of publications.
In December 2005, the founders of the SPU have transferred their founder’s rights to the Lithuanian Labour Market Training Authority under the Ministry of Social Security and Labour.
